Mountain Gateway Museum

This museum is located in Old Fort, NC at the base of the “Old Fort Loops”, the twisting turning mountain grade that took the Western North Carolina Railroad from the Piedmont of North Carolina up and over the Blue Ridge Mountains to Asheville in 1881. At one point on the mountain you could see the railroad at 17 points looking down. The Mountain Gateway Museum tells the story of the famous Southern Railway grade along with other exhibits from the history of the area. It is located next to the railroad track about 45 minutes west of the Convention Center. The railroad is not as active these days but the history is alive and well in Old Fort.
